China and the Internet featuring Kaiser Kuo
Event Description
Kaiser Kuo, a veteran of digital media in China and now co-host of the popular China-focused current affairs podcast Sinica, will discuss the state of internet censorship in China and how it has evolved during their long involvement in the Chinese internet. Kuo lived in China for over 20 years, and experienced the vicissitudes of shifting regulation from the earliest days of the internet in China. Kuo has worked as an internet entrepreneur, a technology reporter, and as director of international communications for two major Chinese internet companies, Youku and Baidu. He will explore the factors that may explain the inflection points in content policy, and examine some of the prevailing notions in the west about internet censorship in China.
About Kaiser Kuo
Kaiser Kuo is host and co-founder of the Sinica Podcast, a weekly discussion of current affairs in China, and editor-at-large for SupChina.com. Previously, he served as director of international communications for Baidu, China's leading search engine. Before repatriating to the U.S. in 2016, he lived in Beijing for 20 years, where he played lead guitar in China's first heavy metal band, Tang Dynasty; headed the China bureau for tech magazine Red Herring, wrote a popular column in Beijing's main English-language monthly, and worked closely with some of China's biggest Internet companies. He started the Sinica Podcast with co-host Jeremy Goldkorn in 2010. In 2016, it was acquired by SupChina and Kuo relocated to the U.S. but the show continues to feature uncensored conversations in English on Chinese politics, international relations, economics, culture, and society.
