"This is not to say that AI can’t be helpful in countering digital hatred. Counterspeech can be time consuming and emotionally taxing for those who do it. Well-designed AI tools could ease some of these burdens. But they should be used to scale the efforts that thousands of people are already making and, critically, AI tools should be offered to counterspeakers (and would-be counterspeakers) in ways that would actually help them. To discover what those are, one must ask them – a step that nearly all developers and researchers have skipped. We haven’t."
