Hiring: Systems Administrator
The Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society seeks a dynamic and experienced Systems Administrator to participate in building, configuring, and running several deployments in a fast-paced academic setting. The Systems Administrator will monitor and maintain the system health and integrity of multiple servers and software platforms. They will provide technical expertise to teams and projects and be a key contributor to related projects simultaneously.
The Systems Administrator will work collaboratively across the organization, primarily within the “geek team,” but also engaging with project managers, research staff and our diverse community of fellows, interns, and partners. Working with geek team developers on implementation of deployment process, creating best practices for security or version updates for production open-source software platforms, or installing research-specific software for researchers can all be part of a week’s work.

As a Systems Administrator, you will:
Participate in building, configuring, and maintaining various linux deployments.
Be responsible for data center backups.
Participate in building, configuring, and maintaining web and database services.
Monitor and maintain the health and integrity of 75+ servers and software platforms daily. This includes upgrading the OS, critical software infrastructure and security patching.
Provide tier 2 and 3 support for user facing software and services.
Contribute regularly to best practices of documentation and knowledge transfer of core infrastructure projects, software development projects, and deployments.

Basic Qualifications
- Minimum of two years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience
Additional Qualifications and Skills
We are looking for people who are/have:
Fluency with Bash, Python or other scripting languages.
Knowledge and experience with virtualization platforms (KVM/QEMU); software versioning systems (GIT or SNV); web server software (Apache, Nginx, Tomcat); relational and/or noSQL DBs; NAS systems; identity management systems (LDAP); backup software systems (Bacula); Monitoring (Nagios, Ganglia, collectd, ELK); and/or CMS platforms (Drupal, WP, Mediawiki)
Interest in, and ideally knowledge of, Linux security practices; ability to master new software and technologies quickly and with minimal training.
Enjoys solving a range of dynamic technology problems in a fun, dynamic and fast-moving environment.
Provides excellent customer service, communicates effectively with both non-technical and technical people.
Takes initiative, follows through with minimal supervision; is flexible, able to prioritize and to manage multiple needs, and is patient, curious, and perseverant.
Works well as part of a team and independently.
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift, move and install server and network equipment up to 50lbs and be available to work during off-hours for occasional systems maintenance windows.
Working Conditions
This position is based on campus in Cambridge, MA. There may be an opportunity to work a hybrid/remote schedule.
Participation in on-call rotation 24x7x365 support of critical systems and services.
Based on the changing needs of the Center, this position may be called upon for other tasks at short notice. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required. Depending on the public health situation, travel opportunities may arise.

*This is a term appointment currently expected to extend through 6/30/24, with potential for renewal subject to funding and departmental need.
