Hiring: Project Director for Ethical Tech Research
The Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University seeks an experienced Project Director for Ethical Tech Research to join its research team. The Project Director will be responsible for directing a suite of research projects on the impacts of emerging and existing technologies on society and on digital governance. In collaboration with the Managing Director and the research team they will develop multiple research studies, write publications, policy white papers and other reports, and participate in dialogue about the work in meetings, convenings and events. Through their work they will have the opportunity to contribute to Berkman Klein Center’s world-class community of scholars and to engage with a wide range of colleagues including other researchers, students, practitioners, and technologists across academia, government, civil society and for-profit environments. As Project Director, you will:
Directly manage research team members including overseeing their research portfolio, assigning them to tasks, and supporting their professional development.
Collaborate with BKC researchers, senior staff and faculty on research projects process and outputs, as well as research project goals and implementation.
Understand and contribute to the research in internal and external meetings, academic writings, grant proposals, and reports and by taking on elements of research projects as an individual contributor.
Translate research project goals and design into practice by overseeing research projects.
Manage research processes and people including overseeing project goals, project meetings and planning, timelines, and tasks, allocating resources to projects.
Collaborate with the education team to bring research efforts into BKC educational programs.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. 7+ years of progressive project management including supervisory experience.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
We are looking for people who are/ have:
Domain knowledge of some subset of Internet research topics such as online communities; social platforms; the ethics of existing and emerging technology including AI, global Internet governance; data governance; and/or youth, media, and child protection.
Qualitative and/or quantitative research experience such as study design and methods, data analysis, data science, surveys, interviews, and/or design research.
Experience writing academic papers, white papers, and/or articles that describe complex research topics for audiences who do not have technical or research backgrounds.
Project and people management experience within non-profit or academic organizations.
Effective interpersonal skills including experience leading groups, receiving, and offering feedback, and building and maintaining relationships with a diverse range of highly motivated individuals.
Demonstrated focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion and eagerness to prioritize these values within all aspects of work.
Proactive, highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to thrive in a fast paced, dynamic environment.
