BKC Faculty Associate Zeynep Tufekci writes about the history of public cryptography and how changing our thinking on data privacy may improve critical research, such as using medical data to assist health professionals with identifying a patient's needs.
"Academics are trying to develop algorithms that can operate on encrypted data, which means they wouldn’t need to access anyone’s data directly," Tufekci writes."With effective regulation, those teams would grow faster. We should ban the spurious and excessive data collection that is currently the norm—not only to put a stop to obviously abusive practices, but also to speed innovation."
