In a collaborative effort of the Network of Centers, researchers from the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society are working with researchers around the world to develop new studies and advance understanding of harmful speech online:
- The Center is working with students led by Faculty Associate Virgilio Almeida at the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil to design computer science research projects focused on understanding various forms of harmful speech online. Students developed three threads of research into hate speech on Twitter, YouTube and WhatsApp. One of the resulting threads of research, Exploring User-Centered Approaches to Understand Hate Speech Online: A Twitter Case Study, will be presented at the MIS2 workshop at WSDM 2018.
- Emerging from her talk at our recent workshop, "Harmful Speech Online: At the Intersection of Algorithms and Human Behavior," Fellow Chinmayi Arun explores the regulation of hyper-local content in "Rebalancing Regulation of Speech: Hyper-Local Content on Global Web-Based Platforms." She is currently accepting comments and feedback.
Berkman Klein is also undertaking related efforts to understand media, information quality and global governance through its Ethics and Governance of Artificial Intelligence Initiative, a collaboration with MIT Media Lab.
